Classroom Lecture: Public Shame and Private Guilt
Below is a PowerPoint presentation on the lecture given in class this past week. It examines specific themes in The Scarlet Letter, including sin, guilt, and shame. In addition, we analyze Puritan life and faith and how it influences specific characters and general plot throughout the course of the novel. Without a doubt, the personal, internal struggles of both Hester Prynne and Reverend Dimmesdale are the primary focus of the text, so please be familiar with their characterization and how each one deals with both shame and guilt differently. I encourage you to review the lecture once again and use the guided notes, ensuring that you have a firm grasp of the content so that you are prepared for the cultural relevance research project, as well as the final paper in this unit.
The last three slides of the presentation outline the cultural relevance research project for The Scarlet Letter. Please read them carefully and be sure to follow all of the requirements in order to receive full credit on the assignment.
